Vatican City was established as an independent country on February 11, 1929. Since then, no childbirth has occurred within its boundaries. The reason is not poverty or lack of development – more of the purpose and size of the city.
The location and main members of the Vatican City have rejected multiple proposals for establishing a hospital. Instead, all medical needs are handled outside the borders of Rome, Italy. Since the Vatican is located in the heart of Rome, residents can easily access high-quality health care nearby.
The main reason for not having a hospital is probably the small size of the country. The Vatican city is only 0.49 square kilometers (0.19 square miles) and has a population of about 882 people. Due to such a small area and population, the demand for hospitals within the city itself may not make sense.
So pregnant women living in Vatican City go to hospitals in Rome, which is why there have been no pregnant women born in the Vatican since the Vatican.
