One of the most luxurious weddings in India
In March 2011, when Congress leader Kanwar Singh Tanwar’s son, Lalit Tanwar, married former Sohna Mla Sukhbir Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria, New Delhi witnessed one of its most luxurious weddings. Luxury celebrations are marked by extravagant gifts, a huge list of guests and grand celebrations.
Luxury gifts and celebrations
The outstanding feature of this wedding was the gift of the bell 429 helicopter given to the groom by the bride’s family. The five-seat chopper is worth about Rs 33 crore, emphasizing the grandeur of the event. Kanwar Singh Tanwar confirmed this, saying, “Yes, the bell 429 helicopter, but it’s a simple wedding.”
The wedding celebrations span multiple events. The ceremony before the wedding, known as “Lagan”, was held at the Fatehpur Beri in Asola. During this event, about 2,000 guests had 30g, safari set and silver cookies in Rs 2,100 cash respectively. The groom’s “tika” ceremony involved a total of Rs 250 crore gifts, and an additional Rs 1 crore was allocated to 18 other family members.
The main wedding was held in the village of Jaunpur in Haryana and there were about 15,000 guests. The report shows that each participant received a “salmon” of Rs 11,000. The event has over 100 different dishes, consisting of 1,000 workers. To ensure that all guests can view the proceedings, 12 giant TV screens were installed in the venue.
Star-studded performances and receptions
Entertainment is a performance by Bollywood celebrities, including actress Neha Dhupia. After the wedding, a large reception was held at a five-star hotel in Delhi, with famous figures at the time such as then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and various Bollywood stars.
Luxury expenses
The estimates of the total cost of the wedding vary. The Times of India reported that the cost was about US$22 million (about Rs 100 crore at the time), while the email today said the cost could reach US$55 million (about Rs 250 crore)
Political and social background
The luxury of weddings has attracted significant attention and some criticism, especially given the socio-economic differences in the region. This grand display of wealth by politicians sparked debate on the appropriateness of such expenditures.
