Between 1909 and 1938, more than 68% of the revolutionaries came from Andamanian cellular prisons, from Bangladeshis, revealing the response of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to Trinamool MP Ritabrata Banerjee.
The reply states that in 1909-1938, 585 revolutionaries were sentenced to prison in the Andamanian cellular prison, of which 398 were from Bangladesh. The second-highest revolutionary comes from Punjab, with residents of 95 revolutionaries. The response was submitted by the Ministry on February 13, 2025.
To answer another question from Mr. Banerjee on March 13, the ministry noted that the cellular prison was not protected under the ancient museums and archaeological sites of 1958 and the bill that still existed in 1958.
Mr Banerjee also asked if there were no busts of Ulaskar Dutta and Barin Ghosh in the Andaman Cellular Prison, and the ministry responded that there was no such bust and there was no proposal at this time.
Mr Banerjee said: “Every brick and cell in Andaman Cellular Prison is engraved with the heroic story of the Bangladesh freedom fighter, but the government has not declared it a national monument.” Rajya Sabha MP expressed surprise that Andaman Cellular Prison (like the pilgrimage of the Indian People) is not a national monument and does not belong to the Indian Archaeological Survey Agency.
The torture suffered by revolutionary Ulaskar Dutta was unprecedented, bringing the battery to prison from Kolkata to give him an electric shock, while Barin Ghosh, a revolutionary, managed to escape from the cellular prison. “If there were no busts of Ulaskar Dutta and Barin Ghosh, then what should be a cellular prison… Through these questions, it is clear what the federal government’s attitude towards the revolutionaries of Bangladesh and Bangladesh is.”
