TNPGCL implements 660 MW ENNORE Thermal Power Plant Expansion Project

Tamil Nadu Power Generation Company Limited (TNPGCL) has decided to implement the 660-MW ENNORE Thermal Power Plant (ETPS) expansion project. Earlier, it was proposed to implement the project under the Public Private Partner (PPP) route.
According to the board meeting held earlier this year, the committee received information in new thermal projects in central and state departments under the agenda of the Southern Regional Electricity Commission meeting, and therefore decided that the ETPS expansion project would be carried out by TNPGCL.
Initially, the project’s engineering, procurement and construction contract was awarded to Lanco Infra Tech Ltd in 2014, which was terminated in 2018 due to poor progress. Later, the National Energy Sector policy for 2024-25 ended in 2024, in accordance with the slow progress of the National Energy Sector, and the Reward (LOA) issued a balance work on the balance work of the project to BGR Energy Systems Ltd in 2022, which was valued at Rs 4,4442.75 crore and was terminated last year.
The ticket said, however, considering the current energy scheme, it has been proposed to envision the project under the PPP model.
According to the Central Power Bureau, the state’s utility has hired SBI caps to prepare a feasibility report to implement the project. In December 2024, the state Department of Electricity said the project would help ensure grid stability and increase power generation.
The state’s electricity demand has increased by 10% per year, and projects such as ETP and Udangudi Super Critical Heat Project have been planned and work is underway to meet the growing demand. It said these projects will not affect the environment.
TNPGCL own thermal power is 4,320 MW. Tamil Nadu has a total traditional capacity with the state share of central power plants (CGS) and other contracts of 15,839.56 MW.
