Doon School goes to co-education? Alumni’s statement on management issues after possible transitions attract attention

A recent internal memo from Doon School unexpectedly sparked heated debate, with many alumni raising concerns about the possibility of a possible shared education for boys-only boarding schools. In response, the school firmly stated that no such decision was made.

On March 17, Doon School principal Dr. Jagpreet Singh sent a message to members of the Indian Public Schools Association (IPSS), which manages the school. A four-page document is attached to discuss why schools can consider allowing girls to enroll. It cites the time and research of change, showing that single-gender education may not have any particular academic advantages.

The purpose of the memorandum is to begin discussion and collect opinions from the school trustees. However, internal information leaked, causing confusion and attention from many alumni who feared that the school’s traditional identity might change.
For many former students, Doon School is more than just an institution, it is part of their identity. The idea of ​​accepting girls drew people to what the school’s unique character and legacy meant, which dates back to its founding in 1935.

In response, board chairman Anoop Singh Bishnoi issued a follow-up notes on April 7. He clarified that the memorandum was not a policy announcement, but a way to start thinking about the future.

“I want to assure you personally that there is no decision on the school becoming coeducational,” Bishnoy said, also assured that no changes would be made without the majority support of the school stakeholders. The memorandum discusses various perspectives, from the demand for new infrastructure and security measures for girls to questions about how to fund such changes. But so far there are no public plans or timetables, and the school authorities stressed that this is just an internal conversation aimed at exploring possibilities. Although the topic of shared education has emerged over the years in quiet conversations, this is the first time such detailed advice has been shared, even if it is just an internal discussion.
