Trump administration suspends $175 million in federal funding for Pennsylvania trans swimmers

The White House said Wednesday that the Trump administration has suspended about $175 million in federal funding for the University of Pennsylvania amid the swimming program.

Ivy League schools have been facing an education department investigation, with the focus of their swimming program. The investigation was announced immediately after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to ban trans athletes from participating in women’s and women’s sports.

But federal currency was suspended, reviewing discretionary federal funds for universities separately, the White House said. The money for the suspension comes from the Department of Defense and the Department of Health and Human Services.
A Pennsylvania spokesman said the school has not received any notice or details of the lawsuit.

“However, it is important to note that Pennsylvania has always followed the NCAA and Ivy League policies regarding students participating in athletic teams,” said spokesman Ron Ozio. “We have been in the past and remain today, fully compliant with regulations that apply not only to Pennsylvania, but also to all our NCAA and Ivy League peers.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office survey focused on Lia Thomas, who swam on the school’s women’s team and was the first openly trans athlete to win the I Division I championship in 2022. The agency also commented on San Jose State University ball and the trans sports games in Massachusetts.
