Trump shoots on competitors, but Americans are flocking to its shopping app

While shoppers are worried that local platforms will raise prices due to tariffs, Americans are searching for Chinese e-commerce apps for cheap handbags, yoga pants and wallets.

According to SensorTower, viral videos that touted high-quality and cheap prices of available merchandise on Chinese services prompted Americans to download apps like Dhgate, which rose to second place in the ranking of free apps in Apple Inc.’s US App Store. Shares of CTS International Logistics Corp., which partnered with Dhgate, have increased Shanghai’s daily 10% limit.

Toobao and Shein from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. are one of the most downloaded shopping apps in the US app stores.
Chinese suppliers and manufacturers are sharing videos aimed at showing foreigners “good products sources”. Many videos claim that high-end European brands of handbags and clothes are actually from Chinese manufacturers, providing links and contact information to the website, allowing viewers to place orders directly with these suppliers.

“You don’t need to play the same thing to play Hermes games. Save your money and get your Birkins and Mini Kelly catch up with Mini Kellys in time for summer 2025,” the title Tiktok video promotes Hermes Bags on Dhgate.

The fake version of the $1,490 Louis Vuitton Pochet wallet is available for only $3.24. The data displayed by the app shows that more than 100 have been sold. The Lululemon yoga pants retail for just $13. Application data shows that more than 10,000 have been sold. LastWeek, Dhgate sent an open letter to merchants on its “Tariff Escort Program” that guarantees traffic, subsidies, logistics and other support for merchants to help them reduce cost pressure and stabilize sales. The platform says it now hosts more than 26 million suppliers of online products over 300 billion times a year, with more than 300 billion suppliers. It covers about 200 countries and regions, has more than 10 overseas warehouses, and provides more than 100 logistics routes.

Dhgate was founded in 2004 by Wang Sultong, co-founder of Joyo.com, one of the earliest e-commerce platforms in China and later called “Female Jack MA” by Amazon.com Inc., Wang previously worked at Microsoft Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc.
