UN chief urges 'maximum restrictions' as India-Pakistan tensions escalate after Pahargam attack | Video | India News

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on India and Pakistan to use “maximum constraints”, warning that military conflicts will be disastrous as tensions between the two countries peaked in the years following the Pahalgam terrorist attacks on April 22.
“A military solution is not a solution. It is crucial to avoid the crisis of military conflict in this time of crisis. He reiterated the willingness of the United Nations to support any diplomatic efforts to demolish and build peace.

The UN Secretary-General condemned the Pahargam terrorist attack (where 26 civilians were murdered) and expressed condolences to the families of the victims in the strongest way. “It is unacceptable to target civilians and the responsible persons must be brought to justice through reliable and legal means,” he said.
Guterres was very worried about the deterioration of India-Pakistan relations, saying: “It hurts me to see this relationship reaching a boiling point. I understand the original feeling after the terrible terrorist attack, but now is the time to retreat from the edge.”
His remarks were made against the backdrop of India's strong reaction to the Pahargan massacre, including the suspension of the Indian Water Treaty and the granting of freedom of movement to its armed forces for any retaliation. The Indian government has promised that the perpetrators of the attack will be dealt with seriously.
The Indian opposition also unanimously assured that the government may choose any action against cross-border terrorism.
