VACB arrests Kochi officials for bribery

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) arrested a construction inspector of Kochi’s company responsible for bribery on Wednesday (April 30, 2025).

Swapna, a construction inspector at the company’s regional office, allegedly sought Rs 15,000 to process applications seeking building numbers. She was allegedly accepted bribes, and at the same time, she was detained by alert officials from Ponnurunni near Vitrila. She allegedly had collected bribes in a vehicle.

S. Sasidharan, chief of police station of VACB Ernakulam, said she was suspected of complaining under the scanner and demanding bribes for various people. He said she requested a bribe even if the applicant had made the required correction as per her instructions.

After public complaints, VACB puts various Kochi officials under its surveillance. On December 6, 2024, it arrested three health department officials on bribery charges. They allegedly seek to process applications for opening a mobile accessories wholesale store. They were arrested when they allegedly accepted Rs 10,000 as bribe.
