Family bakers change weekend street food scene

Visakhapatnam: Vizag City’s bustling street food culture has an unexpected but pleasant addition. Its family bakers are setting up weekend stalls along popular streets to offer affordable cuisine while pursuing their passion for baking.

Now, coastal cities have 250-300 street food stalls, and about 40-50 are operated by family bakers. Cooking entrepreneurs for these weekends can be found in Rushikonda, Sagar Nagar, Park Hotel Junction, Old Arain Road and NAD Street Food Aregy. They usually run from Saturday and Sunday from 5pm to 10pm.

Among these entrepreneurs are young women from nearby villages who have found their way to financial independence by baking. A software engineer takes care of family responsibilities through cooking wishes, keeping his company 9-5 during workdays while running a bustling food stall over the weekends.

Part-time bakers have launched chocolate-spread strawberries, kunafa chocolates, crepes and other innovative snacks that are significantly lower than traditional bakeries. Not only indulge in desserts, some home bakers also prioritize healthier alternatives, offering oatmeal brownies, peanut butter cookies, raji cookies and sugar-free cupcakes.

One of the entrepreneurs is Micky, A B.Sc. Students managing their own baking stalls on Park Hotel Junction over the weekend. He specializes in croissants and pancakes, ensuring his own price minimum (starting at Rs 80) so that street food lovers from all walks of life can enjoy his baked goods.

For siblings Taslim and Faiza, their weekend cheesecake stalls represent the pursuit of passion and overcoming family resistance. “My family doesn’t like cooking as my profession,” Taslin said.

There is a resident like Harisha from Shillong, who moved to Visakhapatnam after her husband’s transfer. “I take care of the kids during workdays, take orders over the phone, and then ship homemade items. Today, people look for aesthetic demonstrations and quality. Instead of investing heavily in the store, they decide to sell on the street market on weekends, and authenticity is more important than flashy decor.”
