Vatican cuts off telephone signals during meeting

Vatican City: The Vatican said on Monday it would cut off telephone signals in small city states during the meeting to elect a new pope – but that would not affect St. Peter's Square.

The Vatican State Provincial President's Office said, “Starting at 3:00 pm on May 7 (GMT), all telecom mobile phone transmission systems will be deactivated in mobile phones in Vatican State State.”

“After the election of Supreme Pontive, the signal will be restored,” it said in a statement.

But the energy of the discontinuation will not cover St. Peter's Square, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told reporters.

Thousands of believers are expected to gather in the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica, waiting for the successor of Pope Francis, who died on April 21.

A total of 133 cardinals from around the world will gather at the Vatican's Sistine Church on Wednesday to begin voting for the new supervisor of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics.

Bruni said the election was to the maximum extent and when they entered the meeting, the Cardinal would be asked to leave the phone behind.
