Vedanta Aluminum launches ‘Nikshaya Mitra Vahan’ to fight tuberculosis in Odisha

Sundargarh (Odisha): In line with India’s mission to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) in 2025, Vedanta Aluminum launched the “Nikshaya Mitra Vahan”, a mobile propaganda campaign targeting remote tribal villages in the Sundargarh area of Odisha. The initiative was tagged on March 24 at the main health center (PHC) in the village of Bileimunda, which coincides with World Tuberculosis Day.

The campaign aims to attract more than 4,500 residents of villages around the Hemgir neighborhood, including those near the Jamkani and Ghogharpalli mines. It focuses on providing education to the community on preventing tuberculosis, early detection and treatment, while distributing information, education and communication (IEC) materials to maintain awareness.

As part of its commitment, Vedanta Aluminum will provide up to one year of nutritional support to 63 TB patients in Sundargarh and recognize the critical role of appropriate nutrition in recovery and therapeutic adherence. The company’s Mobile Health Unit (MHU) has been deployed to recognize, highlighting early diagnosis, prevention strategies, nutrition guidance, and government support for people with tuberculosis.
Dr. Abhilash Sahu, medical officer at Bileimunda PHC, praised the program, noting: “Vedanta Alumininum’s TB awareness driver is an important step towards enhancing early diagnosis and treatment in rural areas. This initiative can enhance TB in terms of increasing awareness and providing nutritional assistance.

David Stone, CEO of Vedanta Coal Mines, reiterated the company’s commitment to community health. “With this week-long program, we aim to maximize awareness and eliminate stigma associated with TB. As part of our broader social responsibility, ‘Nikshaya Mitra Vahan’ is promoting door-to-door services and health camps to improve health care visits and quality of life in the region,” he said.

The “Nikshaya Mitra” program is part of the Indian government Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, which promotes public-private partnerships in the fight against tuberculosis. The initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for “TB Mukt Bharat”, which strengthens the country’s commitment to eradicating the disease.
