Vietnam caught 3 tons of ivory from South Africa

A policeman weighed a piece of ivory from South Africa, Vietnam’s Tajikistan province. It was nearly 3 tons of ivory occupied from South Africa and caught in the latest lawsuit against illegal trade.

Police in northern Vietnam have occupied nearly 3 tons of ivory smuggled from South Africa in the latest operation against illegal trade.

Thanh HOA provincial police said the ivory was found in a truck box early Saturday morning. The account posted on the police website quoted the truck driver saying he was hired to transport ivory from the South Dongnai province to Hanoi, the capital.

Police declined to provide more information on Monday.

Last year, nearly 7 tons of ivory were seized in Ho Chi Minh City, a commercial hub in southern Vietnam.

Vietnam is one of the world’s major crossing points and consumers of rhino horns. It prohibits hunting itself from decreasing elephant populations.
