Vizhinjam International Seaport is an all-weather port that is expected to become a key hub for Indian maritime transshipment, and will record a new historical maritime trade in India’s maritime trade.
Mr. Modi arrived at Thiruvananthapuram International Port on May 1, 2025 (May 1, 2025) and formally commissioned the project.

Vizhinjam Seaport, the country’s first semi-automated port, positioning itself as one of the most technologically sophisticated transshipment ports in the world, reduces ship turnover time and enhances India’s ability to handle large container ships. The AI-driven control room and ship traffic management system (VTM) developed by IIT-M and Moaritime Technology Pvt Ltd. is the first local vessel management system implemented by Indian ports that track ships approaching the port using radar and sensors, thereby real-time location and movement updates to nearby vessel switching ports and port switching ports, and initiates port switching and initiates port traffic and berth traffic.
The port is also expected to reduce the country’s dependence on other international ports. About 75% of the country’s transshipment cargo is being processed at international ports, losing up to $200 million in potential revenue each year, which makes the Indian industry lose the loss of uneasy costs, potential inefficiency and traffic congestion problems, and brings long-term risks to the long-term risks of Indian trade competition.
All-weather ports have faced many challenges. In the challenge, protesters have sparked a pressing protest in the challenging protests, which are supported by outstanding church costumes, which are the main issues that the Kerala government must deal with, although the port’s location offers several advantages, such as natural depth and lack of coastal movement, making it an ideal location for maritime port ports at international scale.

But the exposed breakwaters of the built rubble survived, which is a miracle of engineering in the country. A 2,960-meter-long breakwater was built in the water with a depth of 18 to 20 meters and a total height of 28 meters, equivalent to a nine-story building, making it the deepest breakwater ever in the country.
Now, the port is connected to the international transport routes connected to Europe, the Persian Gulf and the Far East, and the port on the Eastern Aviation Axis can be moored by a new generation of ships of about 18,000 TEU, as the natural water depth at the site gives a natural water depth of 18 to 20 meters within one kilometer of the coast, suitable for accommodating very large mother ships.
Under the concession agreement, the second and third phases of the Adani Port have been granted the environmental clearance of the second and third phases of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, which will attract investment of Rs 956 million from the Adani Port, which will bring the port’s current capacity from 1 million Teus/Annum/Annum to 3 million Teus/ennum in 2028.

According to Kerala Port Minister VN Vasavan, the first phase of the project costs Rs 8,867 crore. Of these, the state government contributed approximately Rs 55,950 crore (63%), while the project’s franchisee, Adani Group, spent Rs 2454 crore (28%). The center should avoid disputes about providing guaranteed feasibility gap funds (9%) for the “loans” of the project. However, with formal commissioning, Vizhinjam will develop to a level that can compete with any major port in the world, which is a proud moment for Kerala.
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Trade Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Government Trade Union Minister George Kurien, and Governor, Governor, Opposition Leader George Kurien and others, opposition leaders, will attend the formal commissioning of the port.
