IIT Madras’ Water Centre receives Rs 5 crore from alumni

Parasuram Balasubramanian, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), provided Rs 5 crore to the institute’s water management and policy centre.
This amount will help build the corpus fund for growth and impact of the center. Aquamap is supported by the Office of Major Scientific Advisors.
Founded in 2022, the center has a seed grant from alumni of the CEO of Theme Job Analysis, as well as Krishnan Narayanan, president of Itihaasa Research and Digital.
Mr. Parasuram received his degree in Engineering and Management in 1971 and 1973, respectively, and received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering. He is a founding member of the Aquamap Council.
He said the center has done a great job in the past three years and now it’s time to operate on a higher track. “We are looking for projects that will have a national impact,” he said.
The center seamlessly integrates the technical expertise of IIT Madras teachers,
Ligy Philip, coordinator at Aquamap, said the center seamlessly incorporates technical expertise from IIT-M teachers, as well as grass-roots participation through NGOs. Up to 26 faculty members from various departments participated in Aquamap.
Since its inception, the Centre has been carrying out water and wastewater management projects in villages in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
