WAQF Amendment ‘attack’ on the Constitution: Sonia

New Delhi: Congress Party Chairman Sonia Gandhi on Thursday called the WAQF (Amendment) Bill a “brutal attack” on the Constitution, saying it was part of the BJP’s strategy to put society in a “permanent polarization” state.
Hours after Lok Sabha passed the WAQF amendment, Gandhi said the bill was “selled” in the House of Commons.
She addressed members of Congress here at a meeting of the Congress meeting here, and she also said that a country, an election bill is another subversion of the constitution and the party will strongly oppose it.
“Whether it is education, civil rights and freedoms, our federal structure or elections, the Modi government drags the country into the abyss where our constitution will remain on paper and we know their intention is to remove that.”
“For all of us, it is crucial to continue fighting for the right thing, justly revealing the failure of the Modi government and intending to turn India into a surveillance country,” Gandhi told the MP at the meeting.
The meeting was attended by all party general managers, including opposition leaders of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi also claimed that the Prime Minister had renamed numerous initiatives adopted between 2004 and 2014, repackaging and selling them as his own personal achievements. She asserted that this also needs to be exposed through our own public publicity campaigns.
Speaking about the operation of the two houses of parliament, she accused opposition leaders of the forbidden speech and often found riots caused by the treasury benches to prevent Congress from raising questions.
She noted that BJP members actively targeted state governments hosted by Congress in their capacity as “completely false”, urging party members to be equally aggressive and increased the failure and compensation of BJP-ruled states.
She noted that this will mean more sharp work and research.
After a 12-hour debate, Lok Sabha passed the WAQF (Amendment) Bill.
The bill passed after all amendments moved by opposition members were rejected by voice votes. It was passed after the votes split – 288 favors and 232 against. The bill will now be filed in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
