Warning after a strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake hitting Tonga near | World News

Tokyo: A strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake hits the vicinity of Tonga, prompting Pacific island nations to warn of the tsunami.

Temblor hit about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the main island in the early morning of Monday, early in the morning of local time, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alarm saying that the dangerous waves could be located at the Cor coast within 300 kilometers (185 miles) of the epicenter.

No immediate report.

Tonga is a country in Polynesia, consisting of 171 islands with a population of more than 100,000 people, most of whom live on the main island of Tongatapu.

The East Coast of Australia is more than 3500 km (2,000 miles).
