An official said the Mumbai Water Truck Association (MWTA) suspended supplies indefinitely on Thursday (April 10, 2025) in protesting citizens’ notices, providing private wells that supply water to tankers to owners of private wells.

The association has a capacity of 500-20,000 liters. MWTA spokesman Ankur Sharma told PTI that they provide about 350 MLD water to different areas of the city, including high-end South Mumbai.

He said all of them had “indefinite breaks” and suspended their actions indefinitely.

Mr Sharma said the authorities had manufactured 200 square meters of land, leased or owned proof of ownership of wells, installed digital flow meters, comply with BIS standards, accurate daily intakes, and some other mandatory measures, in addition to obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from a central groundwater authorization.

“It’s hard to implement all these rules in cities like Mumbai. Tanker services will not resume unless the government has some relaxation under these conditions,” he said.

“We closed our trade,” Sharma said.

He said the MWTA had written to the Office of the Chief Minister and other authorities regarding letters related to their issues.

Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar also wrote a letter to Jal Shakti’s board of directors concerning the non-operation on the private well, but their owners continued to receive notification from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
