Waves 2025: YouTube invests Rs 85 crore in India’s creator economy

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced an investment of Rs 8.5 crore on Thursday (May 1, 2025) to accelerate India’s creator economy.

At a meeting at the Wave Summit, Mr Mohan said there were more than 15,000 Indian YouTube channels, each with 1 million subscribers.

Joined by global creators Mark Robert and Gautami Kawale, Mr. Mohan highlights YouTube’s role in streaming Indian stories around the world. “India not only leads music and film, but is now a creator country,” said Mr. Mohan.

Ms. Kawale shares how Indian regional content is rooted in culture, while Mr. Robert talks about the power of crossing boundaries through AI-ai-abable dubbing and localized STEM content.

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen highlighted the emergence of India as a “global hub of creativity powered by digital tools and generative AI”. With over 100 million content creators and 500 million OTT consumers, he describes the country as “the world’s next creative superpower.” He also showed Adobe’s Firefly AI model.
