Wayanad disaster survivors protested delays in the government. assistance

Survivors on July 30, 2024, protested at the Mundakkai-Choralmala landslide in Wayanad district on Monday (May 19), saying they have not received the government’s promised monthly rent and relief funds.

Many of the most affected people say that despite the government’s commitment to aid, their lives are now in crisis due to delays in payments. The severely affected portion of the survivors requires the government to pay a relief amount of Rs 300 per day and monthly rent.

There was some push and push as tensions escalated during a protest march to Vythiri Taluk’s office. Protesters accused the government of rejecting the money donated by the public for disaster relief. They said the government failed to use the funds correctly to help those in need.

In response to the protests, Tahsildar promised to provide pending payments to affected people within 30 minutes. Official sources said those seriously affected did not receive Rs 300 relief, requiring the same application.

Nearly 300 people were killed and many were injured in landslides.
