“We agree to a ceasefire, but…”: Putin thanks Modi for resolving the Ukrainian conflict | World News

Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first public comment on Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate a ceasefire, thanking world leaders such as U.S. President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva for their efforts to resolve the conflict.

Putin said at a joint press conference of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko that Russia supported the proposal to stop hostilities, but “from the assumption that such a stop should lead to long-term peace and eliminate the root cause of the crisis.”

When asked about Ukraine’s preparation for a ceasefire, Putin said: “As for Ukraine’s preparation for a ceasefire, I will certainly tell you how I view it. But I want to start thanking the President of the United States, Mr. Trump, who is very concerned about the people of Ukraine, and we are all competing at home and abroad. Indian Ministers, Presidents of Brazil and the Republic of South Africa are addressing this issue and giving them a lot of time because the activity aims to achieve a lofty mission – a mission to end hostilities and loss of life.

He further added: “We agree to the proposal to cease hostilities, but assume that such a cessation should lead to long-term peace and eliminate the root causes of this crisis.”

He also mentioned the recent U.S.-Ukrainian discussion in Saudi Arabia, which suggests that Ukraine’s willingness to cease fire may have been shaped by U.S. pressure.

“Now, Ukraine is ready to stop hostilities. On the surface, the Ukrainian meeting in Saudi Arabia looked like the Ukrainian side made this decision under pressure from the United States. In fact, I absolutely believe that the Ukrainians should ask the Americans to mention this decision in this decision, which is certain, because it is a basis, because it is a basis, and it is certain.

On March 11, Ukraine expressed its willingness to accept the US proposal to “immediate, temporary 30-day ceasefire”, which can be extended by mutual consent of the parties, depending on Russia’s acceptance and simultaneous implementation.
