West Indies legend urges former Indian captain not to retire

With Rohit Sharma retired from Test Cricket and Virat Kohli, it is also possible to leave, the Indian cricket team will not have two experienced batsmen.

Cricket legend Brian Lara expressed support for urging Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision to retire from Test cricket. Lara’s appeal is at a critical moment, as it is looming to Kohli’s future in the longest game format. The 36-year-old Kohli has allegedly notified BCCI that he intends to retire from Test cricket ahead of five upcoming matches in India in England, with the series set to begin on June 20, according to a report from the news agency IANS.

However, BCCI has not given up hope, and sources on the board show that they are actively convinced Kohli to continue, especially in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, starting with a challenging England tour.

Lara posted on social media that “Test cricket requires Virat! He will be convinced. He will not retire from Test cricket. @virat.kohli will average over 60 for the rest of his remaining exam career.”

Virat Kohli struggled in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024-25, getting fired in cheaply in eight innings. His only outstanding performance was in Perth’s series opener, where he scored a century.

During his career, Kohli competed in 123 Test matches with an average score of 46.85, including the 30th and 3150s. However, his recent struggles with New Zealand and Australia have proven his decline in form. His ability to score for centuries has diminished, and the bowler has always made him better.

Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, further highlighting the importance of Kohli to the team. Since Sharma and Kohli are no longer in the lineup, India will not have the two most experienced batsmen. This has attracted attention to the team’s leadership and depth of batting when preparing for a challenging series in England.
