Indian community leader kidnapped and killed in Bangladesh

Media reports said that a well-known Hindu community leader was allegedly kidnapped from his home and beaten to death in the Dinapur district in northern Bangladesh.

Daily Star Report Police and Family Members said Bhabesh Chandra Roy, 58, is a resident of the village of Basudebpur, about 330 kilometers northwest of Dhaka.
Roy’s wife Shantana told Daily Stars He received a call around 4:30 pm and claimed the perpetrator called to confirm his presence at home.
“About 30 minutes later, four men were riding on two motorcycles and allegedly kidnapped Babish from there,” the report said.

When Roy was sent home, he lost consciousness and his family took him to a hospital in Dinajpur. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Roy is the vice president of Biral division of Puja Udjapan Parishad, Bangladesh and a prominent leader of the Hindu community in the region.
this Daily Stars Biral police chief Abdus Sabur quoted Abdus Sabur as saying that preparations for the lawsuit are underway.

He said police are working to identify and arrest the suspects involved.
Meanwhile, India on Friday rejected comments from Bangladesh officials about violence in West Bengal and asked Dhaka to focus on protecting the rights of its ethnic minorities rather than indulging in “virtue signals.”
“We reject the comments in Bangladesh about the West Bengal incident,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs.
“This is a little disguised and immoral attempt, similar to India’s concerns about the ongoing persecution of ethnic minorities in Bangladesh, where perpetrators of such acts continue to roam,” he said.
Not an isolated incident: Congress
The Congress party on Saturday (April 19, 2025) strongly condemned the “brutal killing” of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent community leader in Dinai, Bangladesh, calling it an unsettling reflection of the insecurity faced by religious minorities in neighboring countries.
In an article on X, MP Jairam Ramesh highlighted disturbing patterns of violence, including temple blasphemy and targeted attacks, urging the Indian government to take immediate diplomatic steps and ensure justice for the victims.
“The National Congress of India strongly condemned Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent leader of the Hindu community in Dinajipur, Bangladesh for his cruel killing of famous leaders in Bangladesh. The tragic death of kidnapping and beating caused him was uneasy, which reminded him of the growing feelings of religious minorities in the region among religious minorities,” Mr Rarmesh said.
He said: “This is not an isolated incident. In the past few months, there have been deep attacks on ethnic minority communities in Bangladesh, from blasphemy of blasphemy of Hindu temples to targeted attacks on families and businesses of minorities.
Members of Congress called on the Indian government to take action, “We reiterate that we demand that the security, dignity and rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh be protected in words and spirit. Silence and inaction are made when such targeted violence is allowed to take root.”
“The National Congress of India is united with the Hindu community in Bangladesh and with all those who believe in secularism, justice and human rights,” Ramish said.
Meanwhile, police confirmed on Saturday that the autopsy of Hindu community leader Bhavesh Chandra Roy has been allegedly kidnapped from his home and was beaten to death in Biral Upazila in Dinaypur district earlier this week. (April 19, 20254).
Roy is a resident of the village of Basudebpur under Shatagram Union and served as vice president of Biral unit in Puja Udjapan Parishad, Bangladesh, and is a respected figure in the local Hindu community.
