Wikimedia must remove Indian content, defamatory, court rules

The Delhi High Court has ordered the operator of Wikipedia to remove statements deemed defamation, which is the page of the hosted news agency ANI, which is the latest and latest directive to the popular online encyclopedia.
Wikimedia Foundation is the second major tech platform, and X (formerly Twitter) has been in trouble in recent years when placing orders for content in India.
Last year, Ani sued Wikimedia for defamation in the Delhi High Court and cited Wikipedia’s description that faced criticism for becoming a “propaganda tool” for the government and sought to remove such statements.
The court said in an order on Thursday (April 3, 2025): “The statement of victimization is… a defamation and damage to the professional reputation of “ANI” and should be deleted.

The Foundation did not respond to a request for comment on the ruling and whether the ruling would appeal.

ANI seeks damage
The court will continue to hear the case, with ANI seeking damages of about Rs 2 crore ($240,000) and Wikimedia’s apology.
ANI’s lawyer Sidhant Kumar told Reuters In the statement.
Due to this controversy, U.S.-based Wikimedia raises questions about freedom of speech in the world’s largest democracy.
In October, the court ordered The Wikipedia page is related to the controversy, calling it “intervention in court litigation”, prompting Wikimedia to go to the Supreme Court in January.
“Selective and permanent revocation … has had a shocking impact on freedom of speech and limits the opportunity for knowledge,” Wikimedia said in his Supreme Court filing.
X also challenged government orders to block some posts from the 2021 Indian farmers protests.
