TNCC hopes to revitalize the party through rural groups

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) chaired K. Selvaperunthagai and the All-India Congress Committee (AICC), responsible, Tamil Nadu, Girish Chadonkar, Girish Chadonkar, met with Congress and regional conveners, which were appointed as the 25,000 rural councils for statewide parties.

The exercise was led by Congress leader Peter Alphonse.

Mr Chadenkar said the aim was to ensure that the party in Tamil Nadu was fully involved in the formation of the committee. He added that about 40% of the target has been achieved.

“Today, we held a review meeting with all regional leaders. The practice has been going on for the past two months. In addition to leading the region, we have invited coordinators of the parliament [for the meetings]. Given that we have lost power for so long, the task of establishing 25,000 village committees is enormous. I’m glad to see our senior leaders working too [towards creating the committees] By going to the village to meet with grass-roots cadres to rebuild the party,” he said.

Mr Selvaperunthagai said that there has been no such practice since Congress lost power to the DMK in 1967.

“since [former Chief Minister] K. Kamaraj, we didn’t do that. We have set up booth boards before, but we cannot verify their members. This time, members of each village committee will be verified by phone calls from the conveners of the parliament, regional conveners at the assembly level and war rooms established in Sathyamurthy Bhavan,” he added.

The 2026 parliamentary elections are only 12 months old and must show that the group retains a lot of support.
