Wikipedia, a well-known online encyclopedia, has long been one of the biggest support for web searches and has now upgraded itself. Wikimedia, a nonprofit parent company, said it will integrate generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its various services. However, AI technology will be integrated in only a few areas that NGOs need, which will require more enhancements.

But amid concerns about AI taking over the jobs of employees there, Wikimedia clarified that bringing AI into its systems will only reduce the workload of its HR and will not completely replace them as they will be downgraded to higher quality control mechanisms.

“We will use AI to build capabilities that can remove technological barriers to put humans at the heart of Wikipedia, spending valuable time on what they want to achieve, rather than technically implementing it,” said Wikimedia's statement in this regard. “Our investment will focus on specific areas that will stand out in specific areas.”

It added: “We will take a human-centric approach and prioritize human agents; we will prioritize using open source or open weight AI; we will prioritize transparency; we will adopt a nuanced multilingual approach.”

Wikimedia also said the organization will use AI to assist editors in recruiting new volunteers and automate other tedious tasks. “We believe that our future work with AI will be successful not only because of our work, but also because of how it is done.”

Wikipedia has integrated AI to identify vandalism, translation and predict readability, but not in editing. Selena Deckelmann Wikimedia's chief product and technology officer answered an obvious question whether AI and other generation technologies will write the same information in the same way as Wikipedia. She answered frankly, no.

She believes Wikipedia's “open, non-business model” makes it “trustworthy and reliable” and becomes “more valuable” when AI-generated content. She further said, “the new system attempts to generate Wikipedia articles”, “emphasizing the many challenges of using LLMS to generate what Wikipedians call knowledge.”
