William Finn: William Finn, Tony Award-winning Broadway composer, died in 73

William Finn is a two-time Tony Award winner, no longer. He died at the age of 73. The famous lyricist has written personal and emotionally evocative musicals such as Forgery, The New Brain and the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Ron Gwiazda, a representative of Barrington Stage Company and Finn’s agent, verified Finn’s death. The report mentioned that the cause of his death has not been made public.

Born in Natick, Massachusetts in 1952, Finn grew up in a Jewish family. Early in his life, musicals became his passion. He was inspired by Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim and considered him a mentor. Williams College alumnus Finn wrote his first musical there. He was also awarded the prestigious Hutchinson Scholarship – Sondheim has also previously won honors.

Career based on courage, wit and autobiography

An article by the Hollywood Reporter said Finn is known for injecting autobiographical elements. He was a gay Jewish and a near-death experience in brainstem deformities in musicals.

A forged trilogy is a trilogy of a single-play musical that depicts the life of Marvin, a gay man who navigates love, family, and loss during the onset of the AIDS crisis. The musical was reportedly premiered on Broadway in 1992, combining the parade of “False and Forgery”. This won two Tony Awards from Finn for Best Original Score and Musical Best Book, and shared the book with James Lapine, who he often works with. The revival of the acclaimed musical opened in 2016. According to reports, in 1998, Finn turned into medical torture with another musical. A new brain was inspired by his recovery from arterial malformations. It has the theme of the redemptional power of morality, heritage and creativity.

Finn returned to Broadway in 2005 with the 25th Putnam County spelling Bee. This is a creative musical that reveals the inner lives of quirky children participating in spelling competitions.

Finn focused on coaching emerging artists later in his career. He co-founded the Musical Theatre Laboratory at Barrington Stage Company. He also served as a faculty member of the graduate musical drama writing program at New York University Tisch. He has trained a new generation of composers and lyricists.
