Winston Peters criticizes RNZ hosts in Gender Definition Act debate

Deputy Prime Minister and New Zealand’s first leader Winston Peters made news in an interview with RNZ’s morning report host Corin Dann on April 23, 2025 because the topic was less concerned but about their fiery interaction.

The discussion centers on the proposed bill in New Zealand, first defining “women” as “adult human biological female”. The legislation aims to amend existing laws to reflect this definition. If the proposed bill becomes a law, it will define men and women based on biological characteristics, excluding trans men and women from legal recognition.

During the interview, Dane asked Peters about Labour and Greens’ criticism, suggesting that the bill may have attempted to divert attention from domestic issues. In response, Peters accuses Dane of promoting New Zealand’s first political opponents and labeling him as the “arrogant Waxter loser”. He further criticized RNZ, questioning the value of its public funds.
“You are paid by a taxpayer, and sooner or later we will cut the water off because you are a taxpayer’s abuse.” Peters told host and journalist Corin Dann.

He went on to argue that the bill provided clarity and was consistent with “biological reality.”

However, opponents, including labor leader Chris Hipkins, criticized the bill as a way to force distractions among national concerns, such as living and health care costs. He added: “I think it’s time for the Prime Minister to do something about it.”

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has not made public comments by Peters.

After the interview, RNZ defended its hosts, highlighting the importance of news integrity and the media’s role in public figures. Funding allocations to New Zealand state-funded broadcasters RNZ and TVNZ will be announced in the budget on May 22, which sets out the government’s spending plans for the coming year.
