Work to restore irrigation tanks near Wilaya Town begins

The rejuvenation work of the irrigation tank was maintained by the Regional Rural Development Authority (DRDA), and began on Saturday in the village of thekadapanthangal near the town of Waraja in Ranipet.

Minister of Handloom and Textiles R. Gandhi laid the foundation for the work in the presence of collector Ju Chandrakala. “Works to deepen the tank will be carried out. It will help collect excess rainwater discharged from the surrounding villages and during the monsoon,” C. Priya, assistant executive engineer at DRDA (AEE), told DRDA (ARCOT) Hindus.

DRDA officials said strengthening the tank’s Bund is the main task that will be done as part of the work. This will help prevent flooding of surrounding villages during monsoons.

Currently, the Bund is about 2 meters high and 2.5 meters wide. The revival work will increase the total height to three meters. More importantly, as part of the work, the width and height of the Bund will be evenly maintained in the tank area. This uniformity in the Bund will help store at least 5,000 cubic meters of water.

Diverging over 17 hectares of land, the rejuvenation of the tank (total capacity of 150,000 cubic meters) is under recovery and recovery plan 2024-25, with a cost of Rs 662 crore. The drying and deepening of the tank will be carried out at its original four-meter depth.

The existing imports in the storage tank will flow freely due to the rainwater drainage from the village. The entrance is 10 feet wide and the distance is one kilometer.

A tiled walker path will be laid. Seat arrangements, solar LED street lights, composite walls and signage on the Bund are also being completed. Seedlings will be sourced free of charge from the Horticulture Department and farmers for planting around the tank. Tank open space children’s parks, play areas and watchmen will also be part of the work.

DRDA has 26 tanks in the area. In this regard, three tanks, including the Thenkadapanthangal tank, have been occupied to rejuvenate. Currently, over 15,000 residents in at least eight surrounding villages depend on the consumption of the storage tank. Local bodies laid holes on the outside of the tank to meet the water needs of their residents. It also helps to raise the groundwater level to a radius of 3 km.
