Yellow catfish species released to the Chalakudi River

The newly described species of yellow catfish, Horabagrus bugburuswas released to the Charakudi River on Tuesday (May 13, 2025).
The program is organized by the Peninsula Aquatic Genetic Resources Center (PAGR) of the National Fish Genetic Resources Agency (NBFGR) and takes place near Vettilappara. According to the exchange, pastures of fish species were carried out to supplement stocks in the river’s ecosystem.
The fish can grow to 408 mm and weigh more than 2 kg.
Grinson George, director of the Central Marine Fisheries Institute, opened the program. NBFGR Director Kajal Chakravarthy hosted the feature.
Chalakudy Block Panchayat member Shanty Joseph and Deputy Ranjith Kumar, Forest Department Deputy Range Officer, spoke.
The fishing equipment was distributed to the tribe of Mukkumpuzha Unnthi, Athirappilly Panchayat. Kathirvel Pandian, Chief Scientist, PAGR, spoke.
