What happens when the Pope dies, and how to choose a new pope?

The Vatican announced that Pope Francis died a few hours after his last public appearance.
After the announcement, Bells was in the church tower in Rome, the church of Domus Santa Marta where Francis lives was announced by Cardinal Kevin Ferrell (Vatican Camerlengo).
“At 7:35 this morning, Roman Bishop Francis returned to his father’s house. He devoted his life to serving Jehovah and his church.”
Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and removed part of one lung at a young age, was taken to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025 due to a respiratory crisis.
But he appeared on Easter Sunday (the day before his death, his last public appearance) to bless the thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square and bring them to a surprising Popemobile crossing the square, attracting cheers and applause.
In advance, he met with US Vice President JD Vance briefly. Francis performed blessings from the same loggia, who was introduced to the 266th Pope on March 13, 2013.
Earlier this year, Francis spent 38 days, the longest hospital period of his pope, battling pneumonia, guessing who could be the next pope.
The mystery and conspiracy of the seat election of the new pope became popular in the Oscar-nominated film starring Ralph Fiennes last year.

Chamberlain then informed the Cardinal Pastor of Rome, who then told the Roman people – then on a global scale.
“Chamberlain sealed the Pope’s apartment and began arrangements for funerals,” the director said. “It is the responsibility of the dean to inform all cardinals, diplomatic forces and heads of state.”
The dean of the film conference is the role that Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) performs.
After death, nine days of mourning is announced, and funerals usually take place between the fourth and sixth days. The pope is usually buried in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The possible task of the executor may be to make the Pope’s final will, another element that appears in the meeting.

How to choose the new pope?
The Cardinals discuss very secretly what they consider to be a good candidate, and the vote begins at the Vatican’s Sistine Church – which continues until a concluding vote. The BBC noted that the church spoke of the cardinals as “guided by the Holy Spirit” but was also influenced by factions and groups established to strengthen the candidate’s stance.
A relatively new rule is that after 12 days of voting, candidates can win with 50% plus one vote. Twice a day, locals update through the ancient practice of burning votes. If black smoke appears, no decision is made, and if white smoke is made, a new pope is selected.
The new pope was asked to choose which name he wanted to be called, and he would announce it to the world soon thereafter.
