HC pulls up MP police's “inaction” on the vandal of Ambedkar statue

Two months ago, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has canceled the state police operations after it destroyed the BR Ambedkar statue in the Seoni area for its destruction.

Chief Justice SK Kait and Judge Vivek Jain's judicial court issued a notice to police and state government on Wednesday, directing them to respond by May 7. The court heard the PIL proposed by the Seoni residents.

According to the petition, the statue of the chief architect of the Constitution was damaged on February 10 in Dhuma, Seoni. Although FIR was filed against unidentified persons that day, police have not arrested any arrests.

The petition was filed by local social activist Jitendra Ahirwar, who claimed that local police officers were “doing nothing” and sought court intervention.

“The affidavit signed by the Chief of Police Seoni and the station house officers of the Dhuma Police Department should be shown why no action was taken,” the bench said.

Multiple events

In various areas of Madhya Pradesh, it has been reported that multiple incidents in the Ambedkar statue have been destroyed.

In Ashok Nagar, the Dalit idol statue at Ambedkar Park was allegedly defiled earlier on Wednesday. The incident sparked protests in various political and social clothing, and local police have since proposed the FIR.

The president of Congress, in response to the ruling Bharatiya Janata party, said Ambedkar was “continuously humiliated” in the state and the government was “a silent audience”.

“The government should stop its careless attitude and take strict action on such elements, as the extension to such elements is raising questions about government intentions,” he said on X.
