The 2021 SRS report that child health indicators have improved in India.

India has witnessed significant improvements in key maternal and child health indicators between 2014 and 2021, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health. The statement mentioned that maternal mortality rate (MMR) fell by 37 points per 1.3 million live births in 2014-16 to 93 points in 2019-21, and cited the 2021 report released by the 2021 Registration Officer of India (RGI) on Wednesday. Similarly, the downward trend in child mortality indicators continues.
Infant mortality rate (IMR) has dropped from 39 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to every 1,000 live births in 2021.
Neonatal mortality rate (NMR) has dropped from 26 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 19 per 0,000 live births in 2021. The mortality rate for under five years old (U5MR) has also increased, from 45 cases in 2014 to 1,000 live births in 2021.

Between 2014 and 2031, the gender ratio at birth also improved, from 899 to 913 points respectively. In 2021, the total fertility rate remained consistent at 2.0, which was a significant progress in 2014 at 2.3.


According to the SRS 2021 report, eight states have reached the MMR’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target (less than or equal to 70 by 2030). Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38), Telangana (45), Andhra Pradesh (46), Tamil Nadu (49), Jharkhand (51), Gujarat (53) (53) and Karnataka (63) are the best performances. The ministry also said that 12 states and UT have reached the SDGs of U5MR (less than 25 by 2030): Kerala (8), Delhi (14), Tamil Nadu (14), Jamu & Kashmir (16), Maharashtra, Maharashtra (16), West Bengal (20), Karnataka (22) (23), Andhra Pradesh (24) and Gujarat (24). In addition, six states and one UT have reached the SDGs of the NMR (less than 12 by 2030): Kerala (4), Delhi (8), Tamil Nadu (9), Maharashtra (11), Jamu & Kashmir (12) and Himaal Pradesh (12).

In addition, India’s progress in reducing maternal and child mortality indicators has exceeded the global average, the ministry said in a statement.

According to the current report of the United Nations Inter-Agency Inter-Agency Report on Maternal Mortality Estimated (UN-MMEIG) 2000-2023, India’s MMR decreased by 23 points from 2020 to 2023.

The statement said that through this achievement, India’s MMR has now dropped by 86%, while the global amplitude has dropped by 48% over the past 33 years, from 1990 to 2023.

The United Nations Child Mortality Estimated Inter-Agency Reduction Child Mortality Rate (UN-IGME) Report 2024 saw a significant achievement in India.

The UN IGME report said that the mortality rate (U5MR) in India fell by 78%, exceeding the global decrease of 61%, and the newborn mortality rate (NMR) fell by 70%, while the global mortality rate (IMR) fell by 70% over the past 33 years from 1990 to 2023, and the infant mortality rate (IMR) fell by 70%, while the infant mortality rate (IMR) fell by 70%.
