SC Listen to Ashoka University’s case of Sindoor arrest on social media

India’s Chief Justice BR Gavai agreed on Monday, May 19, 2025 (May 19, 2025) to verbally request an emergency hearing from Ashoka University associate professor of political science, Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who was arrested by Haryana police for his social media connection to the Sindoor operation.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared before the Chief Justice, urging the court to hear the academy’s plea early and demanded a FIR registered with him at the RAI police station in Sonipat.
Mr. Sibar asked the Chief Justice, who agreed to the request.
As mentioned earlier HinduOne of his lawyers, Kapil Balyan, arrested him for endangering the country’s sovereignty and integrity and promoted hatred among different groups under the leadership of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He added that the allegations against Mr Khan were “understood” and many political leaders and retired officers made similar comments on social media.
According to reports, police, deputy director of crime (Sonipat), Mr. Khan was arrested on the FIR complained by Renu Bhatia, chairman of the Haryana State Women’s Commission. Jathedi Sarpanch and BJP Yuva Morcha Secretary-General Yogesh Jathedi also filed similar charges against Mr Khan on 17 May.
In one of the two cases, Mr. Khan was remanded in two days of police custody. In the second case, brought by Mr. Jatdi, he was sent back to judicial custody.
