France says U.S. automatic tariffs are “bad news” and the EU is forced to retaliate

“Hostility is increasing,” Lombard told Franco-International Radio.
“It’s very bad news, and it’s obviously a non-cooperational act, where cooperation allows us to solve the problem.”
Trump announced a 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars on Wednesday, which will take effect next week.
“We are taking positive steps and the EU is negotiating,” Lombard said.
“The only solution for the EU is to raise tariffs on U.S. products,” Lombard said. The European Commission (the EU executive branch) is attracting a list of U.S. products that will be hit by tariffs. “We are in the target attitude. We want to accept it, either we will accept it, in which case we will never stop or be unfortunate.
But he expressed hope that we can start negotiations as soon as possible by reducing tariffs with us.
“We want to rebalance the playing field so that Americans are also forced to negotiate with us to reduce tariffs,” he said.
Lombard said warning “the gravity of the moment”: “Our key allies are completely changing their economic policies in a highly aggressive way that will harm the U.S. and European economies.”
