Hyderabad woke up on Sunday (March 16, 2025) when the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) attracted attention to glaucoma, also known as the “visual silent thief”.

About 600 people participated in the competition, highlighting concerns about the disease affecting 1.11 billion Indians, and has already caused 1.1 million blindness.

VC Sajjanar, managing director of the Telangana State Road Transport Company, stressed the need for early testing and announced the company’s role in spreading awareness on bus stops and on internal buses. “More than 10 million people in India suffer from glaucoma and are often unaware of it,” he said.

Sirisha Senthil, head of glaucoma services at LVPEI, warned that glaucoma has quietly progressed, affecting one in eight of the age of 40. Experts call for regular eye examinations to detect and prevent blindness in a timely manner.
