Members of the Erode Urban Regional Congress Committee sent 50 letters to Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday (16 April 2025), demanding the revocation of the WAQF Amendment.

Congressional cadres, led by committee chairman T. Thiruselvam, said the bill was passed in parliament and was recently approved by the president. They claim the bill undermines the autonomy of WAQF property and promotes the seizure of land used by members of the Muslim community.

According to them, the amendment grants full power to regional collectors to determine whether the property is WAQF property – a responsibility previously handled by the WAQF court. They also said that allowing non-Muslim members on the WAQF board is unacceptable because the constitution guarantees freedom of community autonomy. The letter urged the president to revoke the bill to ensure that community members can be unafraid.
