GI Tags Seek Two More Saris from Tamil Nadu

The weaver of the famous Kanchipuram Cotton Saree and Rasipuram Saree applied for the prestigious Geographic Indication Label (GI) label, which is a certification that recognizes the unique craftsmanship and cultural heritage of a specific region.

The Handloom Export Promotion Committee of the Government of India’s Textiles Department played a key role in promoting these applications, which have formally submitted a registration form for geographic signs.

“About ten saris from Tamil Nadu have obtained gastrointestinal tags. More applications have been submitted for obtaining GI tags for saris from the state and are currently being processed. Vadamanapakkam Sakthivel Murugan Handloom Weavers Cooperative submitted applications for the Kanchipuram Cotton Saree, known for its unique design and excellent quality. These saris usually have patterns Rudraksham (Sacred Nut) and Vanki (Armlet) along the boundary. High line density – about 60 holes per 1.2 inches of warp, and a good balance of warp and weft – provides a strength and sophisticated effect for the sari, separating it as a unique art form in the Indian textile tradition.

Rasipuram silk sari is a traditional hand-woven piece known for its lightweight texture, durability and vibrant appearance. Made of pure silk yarns, they have Gopuram (Borders of temple style), floral or geometric patterns, and minimal Zari work to make subtle shimmer work. These saris come in a wide variety of color palettes, ranging from light shades like Tussar and Parrot Green to darker shades such as maroon, navy blue and olive green.

Rasipuram silk sari weave or raised pit loom on pit loom. The metal reeds used allow 100 ends per inch and 75 paddles per inch. The total end of each sari is about 5,100, and a single warp can produce up to 10 saris. The minimum weight of each sari is about 450 grams.

“Getting a stomach gi label for these saris will not only protect these traditional art forms, but it will also enhance its global recognition, ensuring that its unique features are preserved and celebrate future generations. With the ongoing support of generations to come, the Handloom industry in Tamil Nadu has been recognized by Tamil Nadu’s industry with the ongoing support of organizations such as the Handloom Export Promotion Council and the dedicated loom cooperative to further gain recognition in the domestic and international markets.
