National Resident Matching Plan
For the past 73 years, the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) has organized and managed systems that pair medical students with residence programs.

This year’s major residential competition interruption record
This year’s main residence competition is the largest ever. It has 47,208 applicants, a 5.4% increase from last year’s 44,853 applicants. Of these, 37,667 applicants matched the PGY-1 position, 1,683 more than in 2024 (4.7%).
This year’s competition includes 43,237 certified positions available for medical graduates, 1,734 (4.2%) more than the 41,503 positions offered in 2024. In addition, two new majors were introduced to this year’s competition: Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Preventive Medicine and Preventive Medicine, and Career and Environmental Medicine, extending applicant options.
Medical student shares her feeling of not matching any living

After four years at the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine in New Mexico, she did not match any of the four orthopedic surgery residence programs she interviewed.
