More than 20 MLAs wrote to Amit Shah; urging him to establish a “popular government” in Manipur to bring peace

Twenty-one Manipurian MLA has written to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging him to form a “popular government” in the Northeast state, which is now under the rule of the president to ensure peace and normality.

The centre exerted presidential rule in Manipur on February 13, with more than 250 people killed since May 2023 and thousands were homeless in racial violence between Metis and Kuki-ZO groups.

The letter was signed by 13 BJP MLAs, 3 NPP legislators, 3 former MLAs of NAGA people and two independent members of the General Assembly, saying: “The people of Manipur are welcome to the president’s rule… with hope and expectation. Many civil society organizations have publicly opposed the imposition of presidential rule and have demanded the installation of a popular government.

Manipur needs a “bigger common good” politics

“These groups have begun holding public gatherings, corner meetings, inciting the public, accusing the law firm of rulings of not holding claims to form a popular government and establishing the responsibility imposed on PR (the president’s rule) in the state,” lawmakers said in a letter on April 10.

A lawmaker said the letter was received by the Interior Department on April 29 and was made public on Wednesday. The Master also said: “We believe that the installation of a popular government is the only means to achieve peace and normality in Manipur.”

They asked the Minister of the Home Office to “take the necessary steps to install the welcome government in the interests of the people of Manipur. We assure you that after installing the welcome government, we will give full dedication and dedication to achieve peace and normality.”
