Impact of U.S. tariffs: Sri Lanka seeks deeper economic ties with India | World News

Colombo: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake communicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday the need to further strengthen bilateral economic participation in response to the fall of U.S. tariffs.

Foreign Minister Vikram Misri said Prime Minister Modi assured Distanak that India will always “stand” on Sri Lanka.

This issue has been raised in extensive negotiations between the two leaders of the Sri Lanka Presidential Secretariat.

“Obviously, this affects everyone. I think Sri Lanka is dealing with this issue too. At the meeting between the president and the prime minister, there is a difference in this…or a discussion about it.”

He is answering the question whether Dissanayake raises the question of the possible impact of President Donald Trump’s reciprocity tariffs on Sri Lanka.

“Given the impact of such geographical economic development on Sri Lanka, the President of Sri Lanka has particularly emphasized the importance of this aspect, especially given the current economic situation and the economic economy that Sri Lanka has passed at the current moment,” Misri said.

The Foreign Minister suggested that DiSoak stressed the need for further strengthening economic participation in India and Sri Lanka to cope with the consequences of some of these (geographical economic) developments.

“Of course, the Prime Minister assured him that India will always continue to support Sri Lanka when it encounters and deals with these difficulties,” he said.

Sri Lanka was involved in a massive economic crisis two years ago, and India expanded its financial aid worth $4.5 billion.
