India, Parker agrees to cut border troops

New Delhi: In a significant development of mitigating border tensions and the Line of Control, the Director of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan agreed on Monday that both sides would immediately consider measures to ensure reduced forces from the border and forward areas.

A second round of negotiations between India and Pakistan’s DGMO was held on the hotline on Monday night. “The issue was discussed related to the commitment that both sides may not fire a fire or launch any aggressive and criminal action,” the Indian Army said.

It added: “Also agreed that both sides consider taking immediate measures to ensure reduced forces from the border and forward areas.”

Understanding of the cessation of hostilities was announced after negotiations between the two DGMOs on Saturday. Despite cases that violated the Pakistani military’s understanding on Saturday night, there were no such incidents on Sunday night. “The whole of Jamu & Kashmir and other parts of the international border were largely peaceful that night,” the army said in a brief statement Monday morning. “No incidents occurred, marking the first peaceful night in recent days.”
