India prepares to ship 40,000 tons of shrimp to us after tariffs are suspended

Indian seafood exporters are preparing to ship 35,000-40,000 tons of shrimp to the U.S. after U.S. President Donald Trump suspended a planned 26% mutual tariff to lower the tax rate to 10%, industry officials said Monday. Kn Raghavan, secretary general of the Indian Seafood Exporters Association, told PTI: “Now we are on par with other exporters in the United States.

He said 2,000 delayed shrimp containers are now ready after the suspension of higher tariffs on April 9 after it was announced on April 2 by just one week.

The temporary probation maintains 10% of blanket tariffs in all countries except China, which faces 145% of its responsibilities.
Currently, Indian shrimp exports to the United States face valid customs duties of 17.7%, including a 5.7% offset and a 1.8% anti-dumping duty.

Industry sources explain that Indian exporters usually bear tariff charges for tax arrangements, meaning that previously signed goods will face additional additional charges under higher tariffs.

“The 90-day pause provides exporters with the opportunity to fulfill these orders without additional costs,” said an industry representative. The association reported that the orders in the United States did not decline, and that order remains the largest market for quantity and value shrimp in India. India exported $2.7 billion worth of shrimp to the United States in the fiscal year 2023-24.

Raghavan urged the government to focus on providing the country’s “level game” area for seafood exports in the upcoming trade negotiations before tariff pause expires.
