Two back-to-back earthquakes in the Thai capital Bangkok shocked Myanmar at 7.7 and 6.4. After trembling, Bangkok declared an emergency.
The earthquake rocked many parts of Thailand, including its capital, Bangkok, the venue for next week’s Bimstec Regional Group Summit, which is planned to be attended by Modi among other leaders.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake is 16 kilometers northwest of Sagan, Myanmar, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The German Center for Earth Science Research (GFZ) also confirmed the depth, placing the epicenter near Mandalay.
While no casualties have been reported so far, reports indicate that some buildings in the Mandalay area have collapsed and several roads between Mandalay and Yangon have been severely damaged. In Bangkok, the tremor caused panic and people rushed into the streets.
Footage from affected areas showed a terrifying moment when tremors caused the crash of towering skyscrapers, prompting workers and locals to escape from safety. In Vientiane, Laos, high-rise buildings sway and residents are shocked. Myanmar authorities have launched a large-scale rescue operation, with emergency teams working tirelessly to find survivors and assist those trapped at home.
