A 22-year-old Reddit user has detailed how he managed to live independently in Bangalore, with only Rs 20,000 a month, online debate and admiration. In an article that has quickly gained attention, he violated his monthly expenses to show how budgets and wise choices make it possible to survive in one of India’s most expensive cities.

The user lived alone for six months and shared an apartment of Rs 23,000 with friends for rent of Rs 9,000. His food costs Rs 8,000, while traveling through public transport and Rapido has added another Rs 2,000. He allocated Rs 2,000 for other items, bringing his total to Rs 21,000.

He said the key to his frugal lifestyle is to avoid drinking, smoking and late-night parties, which can help him spend money continuously.
