Mattancherry’s Water Metro Pier begins receiving ferries from April

The long-awaited water ferry terminal of the long-awaited Mattancherry has been residing twice, and it can receive and park ferries from April.

Work on the dock is growing rapidly, preparing for the upcoming summer vacation, when families and tourists take a boat ride on the city’s beachfront, and then the tourist season that Kerala started with Onam.

It is one of the largest terminals of the Water Metro, adjacent to the renovated ferry terminal of the State Water Transportation Department (SWTD), opposite the Dutch Palace in the center of Mattancherry Heritage Town.

Official sources said: “Once ready, the water metro terminal can be docked up to three electric ferries at a time and have more fertility at night.

Given the need for water transport from Kochi City to West Kochi, especially for Fort Kochi and Matancherry, four ferries are likely to be deployed and the High Court and the Mattancherry Pier of Water Metro are linked. This includes a ferry, which is expected to hand over to Kochi Water Company Limited (KWML) later this month. The floating ferry is expected to be ready within a month when the last touch of Mattancherry Pier. Just like in Kochi Fort, the pontoon bridge will be well placed into the body of water to ensure sufficient depth to allow the ferry to be placed safely.

Among other things, the Mattancherry Water Metro Action Committee has been at the forefront of the rickety demanding a quick completion of the dock. The delay in completing the terminal has caused commuters to rely on electric ferries running on the High Court-Ford High-Tech Street corridor since last year. Seven years later, ferry service revived the Mattancherry Jetty of SWTD in February, which brought some relief to commuters.

Meanwhile, SWTD is preparing to extend the ferry operations from the city to Matancheri by deploying another catamaran ferry capable of carrying 100 passengers. The passenger association of West Kochi, fearing that commuters must navigate the Uganda complex and its surroundings, has filed a complaint with the Office of the Chief Minister and the Minister of Electricity to seek intervention.
