The inspiring stories of academic achievers encourage those who wish to make a good career to act boldly, come out of the shell and leave their mark on themselves. It sets an example for others when young students get high scores in exams such as UPSC, NEET, GATE, etc. This is the inspiring story of Gate Achiever Pratish Datta, who managed to finish second in all India in 2012 in Gate Aswem in Mathematics.
He did not let the darkness of his eyes obscure his life, and continued to study and pursue a career. Datta has suffered from retina since six months, but lost her eyes completely during graduation and has since begun relying entirely on his mother to help him study. The courage and determination to face this challenge earned him a commemorative gold medal from Professor Jagadish Bose Bose to receive the best academic performance in the 2012 MSC batch of IIT Kharagpur. He completed MSC mathematics from IIT.
He also received his PhD in Password and Network Technology from IIT. He said of his inspiration in an old interview with TOI: “My parents were my inspiration. They never made me feel like there was any problem. I received tremendous support from teachers and partners. My friend and classmate Fauzal Atik took care of ME at IIT.”
He also told the news publication that when he was six months old, he lost his vision in one eye and poor vision in the other. “My parents felt that if I learned a lot, stress would also damage this kind of eyes. My mom would read all my lessons to me and I would remember them.” He said he even did math mentally because there was no other way to do it, but practice made him perfect. “Even Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler lost his opinion for the last 17 years of his life. But he continued to study. My thoughts are now my eyes.”
