Tiruchi’s activists filed a petition to company commissioner V. Saravanan requesting immediate action to prevent trees from being cut down in Panjapur, Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway, to build an integrated vegetable market.

Petitioner C. Balasubramanian, Consultant of Exnora District; KC Neelamegham, National Treasurer, Makkal Sakthi Iyyakam; Convener K. Sivakumar questioned the need to allocate 22 acres of land in the Green Park when it was questioning the need for government land available near the expressway near the area available near the government land.

They recall that as a recreational space about 25 years ago, civic agencies had asked residents and NGOs to contribute to the formation of green parks. Many individuals and organizations, including Exnora, responded to the call. However, the petition said they were shocked by the announcement of the establishment of a market at the same location.

“It is frustrating to know that hundreds of trees will be cut into a market development. Although the civic groups have proposed relocation, it is completely impossible and expensive.”

Activists pointed out that civic groups spend a lot of money on building market complexes in Kallukudi, which is still not used.

They said the park will be a “healthy oxygen buffer” for the upcoming Pagapur bus terminal and urged officials to find alternative locations for the market rather than destroying the park.

The petition is submitted to the district administration.
