The drama thriller Thudarum, fronted by the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, opened to sensing reviews from the audiences and critics on April 25. Directed by Tharun Moorthy, the film also features Shobana, Prakash Varma, Farhaan Faasil, Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, Irshad Ali, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, Thomas Mathew and Krishna Prabha play key roles.
In the first three days itself, Thudarum broke the box office record several times as it won the second largest opening weekend at the Malayalam Cinema with a total global box office collection of Rs 695 billion. The film also ranks the second largest opening of the 2025 Malayalam film, behind L2: Empuraan, as it collected Rs 522 crore in the network in India on the first day of its release. IE collected Rs 7 crore on the first Monday, April 28, according to early estimates from industry tracking portal Sacnilk.
Earlier this month, Mohanlal-Starrer and Prithviraj Sukumaran directed L2:Empuraan became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. The action thriller, released on March 27, surpassed the 2024 survival thriller Manjummel Boys, with a global box office of Rs 26.5 crore. It also became the first Malayalam film to violate Rs 25 billion at the global box office.
Now, with an overwhelming reaction to the Tharun Moorthy film, the latest Mohanlal release will exceed Rs 1,000 crore worldwide and will be the second Malayalam film after Lucifer Secel this year. Thudarum will be one of Mollywood’s highest-grossing films, the Malayalam film industry.
Prior to Thudarum, Tharun Moorthy made his debut in the 2021 crime thriller Java Operation, with his second film, Crime Drama 2022, Saudi Arabia won the National Film Award for Best Malayalam. The 2025 thriller was produced by M. Renjith under his banner Rejaputra Visual Media, and its music and background scores are composed of Jakes Bejoy.
