Mohanlal, Prithviraj sukumaran film inches closer to Rs 250 crore worldwide

Despite strong political opposition, L2: Empuraan continues to maintain its momentum at the box office. The film is a sequel to the 2019 film Lucifer, headlined by Mohanlal and hosted by Prithviraj Sukumaran, who also plays a key role in the action thriller.

The Malayalam action thriller L2: Empuraan or Empuraan – Lucifer 2, headlined by Mohanlal and helmed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, was released in the cinemas last week on March 27. The second installment in the planned Lucifer trial and is the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, Empuraan is unstoppable at the box office even after ten days.
The film finds itself a subtle mention of the riots in Gujarat in 2002 with the Kerala’s Hindutva group calling for boycott. Mohanlal shared a statement saying the Empuraan team regretted the portrayal of Gore’s violence against women in the film, and the producers volunteered to re-examine the 24 layoffs of the Lucifer sequel.
Despite political backlash, L2:Empuraan surpassed the lifelong collection of the 2024 survival thriller Manjummel Boys, which earned Rs 24 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. In the first nine days, director Prithviraj Sukumaran earned Rs 24.165 crore at the global box office.
On the tenth day since its release, the Lucifer sequel charged Rs 350 crore in the network in India, increasing the net domestic collection to Rs 9.464 crore, according to early estimates from entertainment tracking portal Sacnilk. This means the film is directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and is also close to Rs 25 billion worldwide.
Earlier, the latest Malayayam blockbuster broke multiple records at the box office in the first week of the first week, which opened at the Malayayalama Cinema, becoming the fastest Malaya film in two days and the fastest Malayalam to earn Rs 10 crore worldwide and became the first Malayayalama film to earn Rs 10 crore at the overseas box office.
Apart from Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2: Empuraan features a solid ensemble cast comprising of Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Singh, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Andrea Tivadar, Jerome Flynn, Eriq Ebouaney, Sukant Goel, Nikhat Khan, Karthikeya Dev, Fazil, and Suraj Venjaramoodu, etc.
